Getting into Musical Shape & Exploring Jazz Greats

Adult Jazz Combo Class

For the past month or so, I have been participating in an adult jazz combo class. It is put on by the Charleston Jazz Academy and designed for people who used to play in the school band, choir, or even orchestra and want to get back into music. All of us are at different levels of development, but it is still a lot of fun.

I have enjoyed being around other people who love music. It’s only once a week for an hour and a half. That amount of time is about all any of the others can afford to give. I, on the other hand, have plenty of time. I’m retired and have no job or anything else demanding my time. All I have is time. So I practice a lot more than the others.

It is a fourteen-week class, and there will be a performance. We will perform with other classes and age groups @ The Forte Jazz Lounge in downtown Charleston, SC. It will happen on December 10, 2023.

It will be my first time playing jazz in front of an audience since 2007. I have been practicing off and on for 7 years. Yet, I still don’t play as well as you might think. I’m almost a competent player. I need to work on my sight-reading skills. The need to work on my improvisation skills is a given. Jazz is the most enjoyable form of music I’ve ever experienced. Symphonic band is a close second. What can I say? I love challenging music.

I wish I had a photo to share. Perhaps can add some photos to this post at a later date.
