Getting into Musical Shape & Exploring Jazz Greats

Mercy, Mercy, Mercy

Photo is from innerviews.org

I haven’t been able to play my saxophone for a very long time because of neck pain. So, I decided to try to practice even though it hurts like hell. I thought I’d start with something easy (sort of). This is my version of Mercy, Mercy, Mercy, by Joe Zawinul.  I still use Garage Band, a free app with my iMac Computer. If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.

This recording is from a while back. The background track was created using a controller keyboard and the soundbank of my iMac. Forgive my limited keyboard skills.

I’m playing on an old busted-up student model, Yanagisawa, alto saxophone in this particular recording, long before I bought new horns in 2016. The mouthpiece I am using is a Claude Lakey 6*3. Some parts of the saxophone were held together with tape. Back then, it seems I was a much better player, even with a bad horn.
