A new experience while practicing
Sometimes when I’m practicing, my hand & ear coordination is so good that it seems like my mind moves from where I usually perceive it being (which is in my head) to my hands. It is as if I have become my hands, and I can navigate through whatever I’m playing with more ease and accuracy. Has anyone else experienced this?
It’s as if I’ve become one with my hands and the saxophone. It has only been happening for the last couple of practice sessions. I like it. I like it a lot. I don’t ever recall it happening before when I was in the Navy. Maybe it is because, at some point in the Navy, I stopped practicing. Yes, I know. That makes me a dumb ass. What else could I be? Where else, besides one of the other service bands, would one be paid to practice? We never realize what we have until we don’t.
I’m not even practicing all that much. Every other day, maybe 2 – 4 hours at a time. Imagine what I could have accomplished all that time I was in the Navy.
Well, I’m here now, and I do the practice. What I described in that first paragraph is a sensation I have felt in the past, but it was not while practicing. I was praying and meditating. At one time, I found my life so difficult that this was the only way I could make it through the day.
At the time, I knew I was experiencing the oneness I have with God through Christ. I still share it today, though I don’t have to try so hard. And it is an exciting feeling to learn that it can happen while playing my saxophone.
Well, back to the practice room.
